Friday/Saturday, August 17/18, 2012

We just traveled for 27h to arrive in Nairobi!  It is an odd feeling, however, because although I know there is a different world out there at the moment, there is little feeling of culture shock at all because it is all in English!  Pretty odd to describe, actually.

Friday morning we flew from Calgary to Montreal.  We managed a nice smoked meat sandwich (which I was looking forward to since we received our flight itineraries) and had no problems getting the flight to Zurich.  Zurich to Nairobi was about the same distance/time as the overseas flight, but we had more room to spread out as the flight wasn’t booked up completely.  It actually all passed much more quickly than I thought!

The one downside to the entire flight adventure is that mom’s suitcase didn’t arrive!  Kendra and I only had carry-ons (I am so convinced that’s the way to go!), but dad did get his and hopefully mom’s will arrive tomorrow at some point.  It helps that we’re at the same hotel for two nights before heading out.

On Thursday before taking the bus to Calgary I had this seemingly brilliant idea to make matching-ish T-shirts for us all.  It was quite chaotic getting them done, and I now owe Jamie from work big time (never mind the girls in the store!!)…but we each have a shirt that has a cool picture of either a hippo, giraffe, zebra, or elephant on it with the words “Kenya 2012” on the back.  They seem dorky and I know it’ll be work to get Kendra to wear it a couple of times J, but I think it’s awesome J .  It’s a good thing I make myself laugh!

We have a great gym here at the hotel and as there isn’t much to do tomorrow morning before we head off, we are all going to have a work out!  I am so excited, it is ridiculous…but after all that flight time, who wouldn’t be?!  I know the real excitement of the trip will happen after that!

                Off to bed now!
